2nd July: Africans on the Cuban schooner Amistad rise up against their captors, kill two crewmembers and seize control of the ship, which had been transporting them to a life of slavery on a sugar plantation at Puerto Principe, Cuba. (Amistad)
11th October: Her Majesty Queen Victoria holds a dinner party followed by a dance in honour of H.S.H. Prince Ernest and H.S.H. Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Mr. Johann Strauss and his company of musicians once again have the honour of performing for Her Majesty. Victoria and Albert warm to one another during their first waltz together.
